Dissecting our Early 2010 Mock Fantasy Football Draft
By: The Football Girl | Posted:
As mentioned last week, I was invited by Chet Gresham at Razzball.com to play in an experts mock draft for fantasy football 2010. I know, the NFL season ended just nine days ago and it’s only natural to be thinking it’s a little early for this type of thing. But I’d beg to differ for a couple of reasons: A) All of the participants are major NFL junkies who are already suffering from NFL withdrawal. B) An early mock draft is the perfect marriage of last season’s breakthroughs (Jamaal Charles) with the old, trusty reliables (Peyton Manning). Plus, it will be mighty intriguing to compare this early list when the mockers such as Matthew Berry reveal their lists that are stewed over for months.
The draft itself was sloooow, meaning each owner had a whooping eight hours for each pick! Sure it took almost a week to finish but at least you know you’re dealing with some really thought out selections. It’s important to note we were not allowed to draft rookies (and for the record, I think Jahvid Best is going to kill it next year). This particular commissioner service used a database from the start of last season and it omitted names like Justin Forsett and Devin Aromashadu (both names that surely would have been drafted). But it still offered enough to allow us a rich draft in which a few things were learned:
1) Quarterbacks were taken much sooner than in most of last year’s mocks. Almost half of the twelve owners had picked up a QB by the end of the second round. Aaron Rodgers was the first drafted at #11 (by Rookie_BryanBlitz). There was a pretty big drop-off between Tony Romo (#32) and Donovan McNabb (#49)… and Jay Cutler (#52) and Ben Roethlisbeger (#67). Perhaps the steal of the draft was FDC_Mike Clay snagging Carson Palmer in the 15th round!
2) The battle between Maurice Jones Drew and Chris Johnson for the coveted numero uno slot has begun. In our draft, MJD took the honors (much to my delight as I had the #2 slot and really wanted Chris Johnson).
3) I took the first defense of the draft in the form of the New York Jets. None of the defenses selected were surprising, but this might be the first fantasy draft in my lifetime in which the Chicago Bears had to go the free agency route.
4) Both Brett Favre and Brian Westbrook were drafted, even though both have very tenuous futures.
